Our fireplace wall was quite plain to say the least. We thought about stone, tile but then ended up doing a simple and inexpensive board and batten wall. This is a simple DIY project, we kinda made up the pattern as we went.
Wood type: MDF
Finish: White paint and wood filler.
Hardware: N/A

Here's a before shot of the fireplace wall:
I also added some in wall speakers at the same time. So I had to cut some holes in the drywall.
Of course I ran into a few issues, I have a conduit for cables that was in the way. I had to cut some of it so that the speaker could fit.
The next step was to tear out the original baseboard and started making my design with the mdf boards. I had to rip some of the boards on my table saw so that they would fit properly on the side walls.
Walls are never straight so I filled with caulking. I also filled some of the mdf wood seams with wood filler
Now I have to figure out if I prefer the speakers with the grills on or off...
Project Complete! (Well for now, I plan on adding a floating mantel at the top eventually).
